Follow up: Ad Reps on Twitter?

In the end, I figured I would just present what I know about Twitter to the advertising department, and pick their own collective brains about the best ways they could implement it, because frankly, I just don’t know much about their side of the biz.

They actually came to the same conclusions I did, namely, “Why do we need to tell businesses about Twitter, get them to try it, only to discover we’re just driving them away from purchasing ads with us?”

We did, however, think that Twitter can be used for a couple of things in-house:

1. Now that the reps understand it a little better (I hope), if a client asks them about it, they will be able to answer them knowledgeably.

2. We can use it to pimp our own stuff. Perhaps a centralized account for the entire classifieds or advertising departments (or both) that everyone can access. They can then tweet about upcoming special sections, answer questions about services we offer that maybe people did not know about, offer special circulation deals (mention you “saw this on Twitter and get $10 off one month subscription” etc.) – basically just be another way customers can reach us and ask us questions.

I thought perhaps a potential client who wants to advertise with us but doesn’t know much (new in town maybe?) heard about us on Twitter and like that we’re using leading edge stuff could tweet a question at @IndySales and any Rep who catches it can answer it and maybe make a sale and gain some more revenue for the paper. Maybe that’s a stretch but it could be a potential scenario.

So those are the conclusions we came to in our meeting this morning. I think they understand Twitter better now and are intrigued. We might be able to make use of it, we might not, but potential is there.

I gave this some thought over the last few days, but couldn’t come up with anything better than what you posted. I suppose if I had an answer, I’d be making a lot more money than I am in the newsroom!
